Student Life at Global Scholar

While the Global Scholar program is academically rigorous, there is ample time to relax and have fun. A trip to Washington DC, a nature hike, a World Cup watching party, an international dessert extravaganza, a conversation about sports around the world with ESPN anchor Tony Kornheiser, and Halloween in July are just a few ways Global Scholar has mixed summer fun into a serious, college-level academic program. Over the course of two weeks, students will also sample life at one of the nation's Top 15 Liberal Arts colleges, living in the beautiful brick dormitories of Washington and Lee University and sharing meals in the historic dining halls. Students will live in a residence hall with other Global Scholar participants and a Resident Advisor. Global Scholar's residential advisors are students and recent graduates of top universities who have been trained to help students adjust to the challenges of college life.

A Day in the Life of a Global Scholar

7:30 a.m. – Hit your alarm clock and climb out of bed. It's a fresh day at the Global Scholar program! After getting dressed and gathering up your books, head over to the Market Place at the Elrod Student Center, where pancakes, French toast, and Southern-style cooking await you on the breakfast line. Next, cross the Lawn to one of the lecture halls on the Colonnade. There, morning assembly kicks off each day with a fun activity, brief announcements, and the Daily Grind - a presentation of a current news clipping by a Global Scholar student.

9:00 a.m. – Whip out your spiral and get ready for an hour of serious note-taking. Today's lecture, "Global Governance 101: From Bretton Woods to Contemporary Times," will give you a historical overview of important global issues. You'll have a chance to flush out your questions in "Preceptorial," a collegiate term for the small discussion sessions that follow each lecture. You can continue your "Precept" discussion over lunch - or you can take a break by playing a game of Ultimate Frisbee on the Lawn.

3:00 p.m. – Hear about "The New Global Economy" from a guest speaker who has spent a career at the forefront of international finance. And then it's off to your workshop. If you've chosen the College Readiness Track, you'll work sedulously to learn SAT words (if you don't already know what sedulous means, don't worry - we'll go over it at the workshop). If you've chosen the Leadership Development Track, you'll practice public speaking. Later in the week, you'll put this skill to the test when it's your turn to present a current event for the Daily Grind.

6:00 p.m. – Dinner provides an opportunity to rest and relax before the night-time social activity: a trip to Lexington's historic and newly renovated State Theatre. After returning to campus, you can hang out with your hallmates before bed.

11:45 p.m. – Rest up! Tomorrow's going to be another full day!
